Leadership

I was talking with my buddy Joseph last night and he asked: "Why is everyone talking about Tim Tebow and why is he able to win?"  The reason people are talking is because it's a phenomenon...the Tebow Effect, that is.  Tebow lacks the technical skills that an elite QB should possess. He doesn't  throw the perfect spiral at the perfect time to the perfect target, yet he is still leading his team to victory in the uber-competitve NFL.  How is he able to do that?  Easy answer: Leadership.

The guy is a leader through and through.  He possesses 3 vital traits that it takes for one to become a truly RESPECTED leader:
1. He has impeccable morals
2. He works harder than anyone else
3. He's a man of integrity.

Morals: The guy is a devout Christian.  I don't care if you're Catholic, Mormon, Buddhist, Nothing-ist, male, female, dark or pale, if you have good morals you can be TRUSTED.  Those around you will follow you when you speak and act with GOoD-ness.
Hard Worker: The guy is also a worker.  If you're the hardest worker around, others will know that you are DEPENDABLE...they can count on you to be ready.
Integrity: the guy says what he means and means what he says.  He says what he'll do and then he does it. Everyone around him respects him for it.  His integrity lets those around him know that he is RELIABLE.

The dude is a true leader.  When you have a true leader, it doesn't matter if they throw the perfect pass, devise the best business plan, or sign off on the all of the right policies.  It doesn't matter if you're the smartest, biggest, most erudite or experienced. People don't respond to your play, people respond to your Way.

People who are truly RESPECTED leaders elevate themselves through discipline and proper thoughts, words and deeds. In elevating yourself, you elevate the conciousness of those around you. That is how you make everyone around you better. I haven't played in the NFL for 9 yrs because I was the biggest, fastest and strongest.  I didn't become team captain by being a great player, I did so by being a great teammate, friend and example.  I helped make those around me better.  They saw me overachieve, and it inspired them to do more with their own gifts and talents too.

Troy Polamalu is a respected leader too.  Although Troy IS an incredible player, ask anyone who has ever known him and they will say that he is an even better person.  They will say that he is the nicest, kindest human being they've ever met.  That is why people trust him, depend on him and feel comfortable relying upon him. He is a true leader, a true inspiration, because he is stronger mentally and spiritually than most others choose to be. He's not one of those fake "ra ra" guys who may get people temporarily excited on the outside. His leadership endures to the core. He IN-spires people.  If you want to inspire others, be an inspiration, not an immitation.

The Broncos are winning because Tim Tebow is a true, respected leader. The Pittsburgh Steelers are a top-notch defense annually because Troy Polamalu is a true, respected leader. When the New England Patriots won 3 Super Bowls in a row it wasn't because they had a team full of superstar athletes. In fact, they had a bunch of guys who were thought to be "over the hill", and "past their prime". They won, however, because they were a team comprised of true, respected leaders. It's not about "street cred", it's about character.  I will take a crew with CHARACTER over a crew with CREDENTIALS any day of the week.  Case in point: Philadelphia Eagles.

We need more true, respected leaders in our country. At what point did we as a nation cease to realize the importance of values such as good morals, hard work and integrity. When the game is on the line or when the winds of agitation start to blowin', those are the values that provide the foundation to weather the storm. Whether it's a team, company or country, if you want to be successful you'd better have a true, respected leader who will IN-spire the masses.  I say Palomalu for president. I say if USA needs a CEO, people like Tebow are the way to go. We need more GOoD people who can lead us to higher ground. Tim Tebow, Troy Polamalu, we need more people like you in sports and in life.

Amen.  Amen to that.

Blessings2u,
Coy Wire

  • In response to the early criticisms of the trait approach, theorists began to research leadership as a set of behaviors, evaluating the behavior of successful leaders, determining a behavior taxonomy, and identifying broad leadership styles. Thanks.
